A Tricount alternative for group trips

If you want to log shared costs without anyone having to sign up, Tricount does that very well and switching gains you nothing. The question is different: if you are also organising the trip, is it worth having the money in one place and the itinerary, bookings and tickets in four others?

First, the fair part: Tricount gets people in better than we do

Tricount does one thing with no friction: create the group, send a link, and people log expenses without signing up, without installing anything, and without anyone having to explain how it works. That is why half of Spain has it on their phone, and why it gets used for a flat or a dinner as readily as for a trip.

And one thing has to be said before going further: on that, it beats us today. Adding someone to a trip in OhMyWay needs their email address; in Tricount a link is enough. It is the clearest difference between the two and it is the next thing we are building. If all you need is five people logging expenses this week without installing anything, use Tricount.

The real argument: where the ticket is

The problem with a group trip does not show up at the end, when it is time to settle up. It shows up at six in the morning at the gate, when you need the hotel confirmation and it is in someone else’s email, and they have no signal.

An expenses app cannot help with that, because it does not know you are travelling. That is the whole difference: Tricount solves the money, and solves it well; a travel app solves the trip, and the money is one part of it.

When not to switch

When to

On taking your data with you: Tricount exports to a spreadsheet. OhMyWay does not import that file yet, so today the move is manual. That is a real limitation, which is why it is written here rather than buried.

What OhMyWay is

A free group-travel app: itinerary, bookings, documents and expenses in one place, shared with the people travelling with you and available offline. On iPhone, iPad and Android, in five languages.

The method for splitting costs — app or no app — is in how to split expenses on a group trip. And if yours is Splitwise rather than Tricount, that comparison is here.

Frequently asked questions

What does Tricount do well?

Splitting costs with no friction. Create the group, send a link, and people join with no account and no install. For a dinner, a flat or a weekend, it is hard to improve on.

Where does it beat you?

Getting people in. Today, adding someone to a trip in OhMyWay needs their email address; in Tricount a link is enough. It is the clearest gap and it is on the list of what comes next.

Where does it fall short on a trip?

It does not know you are travelling. No itinerary, no bookings, no tickets — so during the trip you are still hunting for the hotel confirmation in the inbox of someone with no signal.

Can I import my Tricount expenses?

Tricount can export to a spreadsheet. OhMyWay does not import that file yet, so today the move is manual.

All of this, done for you

OhMyWay keeps your itinerary, bookings, documents and expenses in one place and shares them with your group. Free, and it works offline.
