First, the fair part: Splitwise is good
Splitwise has done one thing for years — splitting expenses between people — and does it better than almost anyone. Cross-debts, balances, settling up, reminders. If what you have is a shared flat, a recurring dinner or a group that lends each other money, there is not much to improve on and switching will gain you nothing.
This page is not here to argue otherwise. It is about a narrower question: if you are also organising the trip, does it make sense for the money to live in one app while the itinerary, the bookings and the tickets live in four others?
Where the difference shows
| Splitwise | OhMyWay | |
|---|---|---|
| Splitting costs across a group | Yes, and very well | Yes |
| Multiple currencies at the day’s rate | Yes | Yes |
| Day-by-day itinerary | No | Yes |
| Bookings with reference and tickets attached | No | Yes |
| Documents offline | No | Yes |
| Packing lists and to-dos | No | Yes |
| Group chat inside the trip | No | Yes |
| Using it outside a trip (flat, dinners) | Yes | Not what it is for |
| Free | With limits, plus a paid tier | Yes, no in-app purchases |
The real argument: where the ticket is
The problem with a group trip does not show up at the end, when it is time to settle up. It shows up at six in the morning at the gate, when you need the hotel confirmation and it is in someone else’s email, and they have no signal.
An expenses app cannot help with that, because it does not know you are travelling. That is the whole difference: Splitwise solves the money; a travel app solves the trip, and the money is one part of it.
When not to switch
- If you use it for a shared flat or for costs that are not a trip. OhMyWay will not help: everything hangs off a trip.
- If your group already has it installed and working. Changing tools mid-trip is worse than an imperfect tool.
- If you need cross-debts and person-to-person settling exactly as Splitwise does them, at that level of detail.
When to
- If you are the one organising and you are tired of answering what time we leave for the twentieth time.
- If the tickets and bookings are scattered across email, the group chat and your photo roll.
- If it is the same people every year and you would like the whole trip kept, not just the accounts.
On taking your data with you: Splitwise exports a group to CSV from its website. OhMyWay does not import that file yet, so today the move is manual. That is a real limitation, which is why it is written here rather than buried.
What OhMyWay is

If it is only the money side you care about, how to split expenses on a group trip has the method, app or no app.
